The AAW is an international non-profit dedicated to the advancement of woodturning, a skill and an art that dates back to ancient Egypt. Woodturners create work on the lathe, a machine that holds and spins wood securely so that it can be carved and shaped. Our membership of 15,000 includes artists, craftspeople, galleries, collectors from every continent except Antarctica.
Wood is a demanding and rewarding medium for the artist. An intimate knowledge of each variety's different properties and propensities is essential, as is technical mastery of the tools and the lathe. Working with the wood is essential, and the act of creating in wood is often likened to a dance or a collaboration between nature and the artist. The works in Currents and Harmony are individually crafted, one-off pieces created specifically for these exhibitions.
Rising will travel to the AAW Gallery of Wood Art (galleryofwoodart.org) in Saint Paul, Minnesota, where it will be on display through the end of the year.
